Last Fall, Ulysse Nardin presented the new Classic Sonata watch, featuring a stainless steel case and a blue dial. Today, the elegant collection is enriched with two new editions, eternal black and rose gold, or stainless steel with blue markers, each with a black alligator strap. Both models have a 44-mm diameter case, water resistant to 30 meters, with a sapphire crystal case back.
With the Classic Sonata, mechanical complications are always designed with the wearer in mind, the goal being a fusion of form and function. This edition of the Classic Sonata certainly pleases on an aesthetic level, with its streamlined design. After all, simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. But don’t be deceived, this timepiece is also incredibly functional.
The dial is offered in two variants, a blue and a white. The overall aesthetic of the dial is very similar to classic marine chronometers, with Roman numerals painted very legibly and elegantly, a 2nd sub-dial at 6 o’clock, and power book at 12 o’clock. The date window at 6 o’clock is a contemporary addition, of course, but nicely incorporated into a rather busy dial. The spade-shaped hands are in keeping with the vintage theme and are heat-blued for the white dial and polished to the blue. For that a vintage-inspired timepiece, the Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur is refined, well-designed, and yet, contemporary enough to make for a daily wear piece. The highlight of the watch, in my opinion, is the movement that offers quite a lot of value in terms of horological pedigree. The Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur can be found at boutiques and retailers for 6,900 CHF in steel using an alligator strap, 7,600 CHF in steel using the steel bracelet, and 17,900 CHF in 18k rose gold using the alligator strap, using the exact prices in euros. While possibly historically best known for their marine chronometers, Ulysse Nardin is in modern times, an integrated manufacturer of complete watches and movements including some quite high-end and complex calibers. The Ulysse Nardin Executive Skeleton Tourbillon is Precisely the latter. Having an in-house flying tourbillon movement, exceptionally minimalist skeletonization, along with an ultra modern appearance, the Ulysse Nardin Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Blue represents a facet of Ulysse Nardin that maybe deserves another look.
Mechanical complications pared down to their most essential form make this timepiece an ideal travel companion. An alarm function which wakes the user with a pleasant cathedral chime is positioned be-tween 12 o’clock and 2 o’clock. In the center of the counter, the ‘countdown’ display of the last 12 hours, allows to select a wake-up in the morning or in the afternoon.
Another exclusive Ulysse Nardin innovation, the Dual Time function, means both home time and current time can be viewed simultaneously. Driven by the UN-67 manufacture movement, it has been re-designed for even better ease of use. Time zone adjustment can be made both forwards and backwards, just by using the pushers to change the position of the hour hand.
