Reviewing MBF LM1 Silberstein

Silberstein’s replica watches are known for the signature use of three bright primary colours (red, blue, and yellow); three simple geometric shapes (triangle, square/rectangle, and circle or in three dimensions pyramid, cube, and sphere); and sophisticated juxtaposition of materials and finishes. Silberstein was the first to create a replica watch with a sapphire crystal case, and he was a pioneer in making haute horlogerie playful with his use of bright colours and non-traditional materials.

You know Max Büsser of course and some of probably also remember Alain Silberstein. The french architect at the time created some real outstanding replica watches… Discover the new MB&F LM1 Silberstein by dozens of pictures I took…

Alain Silberstein loves geometric forms, colors and Bauhaus Design.

Max Büsser and his Friends stand for exceptional creations.

After 15 years managing prestigious replica watch brands, Maximilian Büsser resigned from his Managing Director position at Harry Winston in 2005 to create MB&F – Maximilian Büsser & Friends. MB&F is an artistic and micro-engineering laboratory dedicated to designing and crafting small series of radical concept replica watches by bringing together talented horological professionals that Büsser both respects and enjoys working with.

However, it is the concave curve of the sub-dials that highlights Alain Silberstein‘s philosophical approach most. While the convex sapphire crystal dome and balance bridge offer protection from outside forces, the concave subdials attract and welcome the “eternal time” of the universe into the movement, where it is transformed and displayed as two completely independent time zones.

Naturally, the hands are similarly concave so that they seamlessly complement the curvature of the dials. Even the two crowns are steeped in Silberstein magic: their distinctive six-pointed star shapes formed by overlapping two triangles make winding a tactile pleasure.

For this new Performance Art series, Silberstein has taken MB&F‘s classic Legacy Machine N°1 and imbued it with his unique flair for the unconventional. His use of his signature three bright colours and shapes: red, blue and yellow; triangle, rectangle and circle for the hands and dial markers; and three-dimensionally translated as a cone, cube and sphere for the power reserve, catch the eye as they contrast against the more subdued movement plate below.

Alain Silberstein: “I resonated with LM1 because by highlighting the balance – the mechanism that splits time into miniscule increments – it highlights how man converts eternal time into something he can use. It was a pleasure to work from such a creative timepiece as LM1 because the suspended balance and arched bridge made it feel like working on the set of a science fiction film”.

The MB&F LM1 Silberstein is a limited edition of 3 x 12 pieces in red gold, titanium, or black PVD-treated titanium.

I do have to admit that I really love the work of Max Büsser and I like what Alain Silberstein did at the time. Now seeing an oeuvre being created by these two visionaries for me is thrilling. I took these pictures during Baselworld 2016, but since the embargo was only lifted a couple of days ago, I can only show them to you now.

A little “warning” I took a lot of pictures showing many details of the the three limited editions. So take your time to enjoy my little photographic orgy!

These are three official pictures provided to me by Max …
